On Monday, November 2, 2015, the Association for New Canadians hosted a Clothing Market for clients at its ESL Training Centre. Everyone in attendance was given the opportunity to choose from an array of clothes and other items that were donated to the Association by extremely generous community members – we were even given some homemade items, including mittens and hats just in time for winter. On Wednesday, October 7, Premier Paul Davis officially launched the Express Entry Skilled Worker Category, under the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). As part of the announcement, the Association was pleased to welcome, among others, the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills to its AXIS Career Services Centre. Under this new immigration category, 550 annual Express Entry nominations will be added to an additional 500 annual nominations under the existing PNP, helping to meet the goals of the province’s new population growth strategy: Live Here, Work Here, Belong Here, A Population Growth Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador, 2015-2025...

The Association for New Canadians held a number of activities this week in celebration of Halloween. First, on Wednesday, October 28, clients of the Association’s ESL Training Centre carved pumpkins for a pumpkin carving contest.
In addition, on Thursday, October 29, children from the Association’s International Friends Daycare Centre went trick-or-treating around the ESL Training Centre to show off their great costumes. To finish off the day, clients and staff took part in a sing along (including some jingles to get ready for Christmas), voted for their favorite pumpkin, and enjoyed some Halloween cake and snacks. On October 28th, the Association for New Canadians' Women's Group partnered with St. Mark's Anglican Church, the MUN Medical Gateway Program, and the MUN School of Pharmacy to offer an evening of cooking and learning. Participants made healthy pumpkin spice muffins, roasted pumpkin seeds, and were provided with tips on how to eat healthy on a budget thanks to the Pharmacy students in attendance. At the end of the evening, everyone received a loot-bag filled with the ingredients required to make their own muffins at home. A big thanks to St. Mark's, the MUN Medical Gateway Program, the MUN Pharmacy Class, and Sobeys Howley Estates for making this event a success! On Thursday, October 22, students and staff of the Association for New Canadians’ ESL Training Centre held a Terry Fox Cheque Presentation Ceremony. During the event, Heather Strong of the Terry Fox Foundation was presented with a cheque consisting of funds donated by clients and staff of the Association (half of the money was raised by students of the ESL Training Centre while the other half was matched by ANC staff). Everyone in attendance was also given the opportunity to watch a video about a young man named Yusuf which highlighted the positive impact that cancer research has had on the lives of Canadians. On Monday, October 19, clients and staff of the ANC’s ESL Training Centre spent the day at Lester's Farm Market. Everyone in attendance had an opportunity to participate in on-site activities, such as hay rides and a corn maze. Clients also enjoyed a tour of the grounds and met some farm animals! On Saturday, October 17, the ANC Young Adults Group, along with participants from the MUN Medical Gateway Program, visited the annual Pumpkinfest at Lester's Farm Market. Everyone in attendance had an opportunity to check out a number of great attractions, including a hot pepper eating contest, pie eating contests, hay rides, a corn maze, and lots of farm animals. On Thursday, October 15, clients at the Association for New Canadians’ ESL Training Centre took part in the CIVIX Student Vote. This event is a mock vote coinciding with the Canadian federal election to be held on October 19. Participants held a “rally” in the ESL Training Centre Cafeteria, during which they were provided with an overview of the five candidates in their riding as well as highlights from the platforms of each party. After the rally, clients from LINC Level 5 acted as volunteer polling station attendants and assisted everyone as they made their vote.
