The Association for New Canadians Women's Group spent the evening of Monday, August 24, canoeing in Mount Pearl. Several of the participants had never been in a canoe before which added extra excitement and fun to this event! A big thanks to the City of Mount Pearl! On Monday, August 24, clients at the ANC’s ESL Training Centre were provided with a Bike Safety Demonstration by Constable Ken Milks of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC). Everyone in attendance was given the opportunity to learn about a number of important topics related to bike safety, including correct use of helmets, hand signals, bike maintenance (air pressure, brakes, etc.), as well as proper clothing and how to use reflectors. On Thursday, August 13, the ANC’s SWIS Team hosted a Closing Ceremony for its Summer Enrichment Program at the ESL Training Centre. Participants designed and presented collages to illustrate the variety of activities that they took part in during the summer. All those in attendance were presented with a bike safety demonstration by representatives from the Read to Ride Literacy Program, and were provided with a number of prizes, including bicycles, helmets, and soccer balls. On Wednesday, July 15, the ANC hosted a Community Connections Fair in the cafeteria of the ESL Training Centre. The event featured a number of community organizations that informed participants of potential volunteer opportunities. Presenters at the event included: Big Brothers Big Sisters, the St. John’s Women’s Centre, the Community Sector Council, YMCA, NL Public Libraries, Habitat for Humanity, Daybreak, the Association communautaire francophone de St-Jean (ACFSJ), and the Multicultural Women’s Organization of NL (MWONL). The Association for New Canadians would like to say a big THANK-YOU to Iceberg Quest Tours and the Community Sector Council for offering a special tour to the many active volunteers that live in our community. What a great way to thank them for their service! ANC Volunteer Nicole Clarke was on board to enjoy the festivities, and like all of our volunteers, she's an integral part of the work we do in helping to settle newcomers

On Wednesday, July 1, students and staff at the Association for New Canadians’ ESL Training Centre celebrated Canada Day! Students took part in a number of activities throughout the day, including a Canadian-themed scavenger hunt. Everyone in attendance enjoyed some barbeque and a cake cutting ceremony before proceeding to the celebration on Confederation Hill in St. John's, where the organization was hosting a booth at the City of St. John's Canada Cultural Showcase. The Association for New Canadians will be hosting its third annual Multicultural Family Sports Day to celebrate Canadian Multiculturalism Week Day 2015. Activities will include a variety of family-oriented games and sports, as well as a lunchtime BBQ. This event is free of charge and open to the public. Come and enjoy the day with us!
