Students and staff at the Association for New Canadians' ESL Training Centre celebrated St. Patrick's Day on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. In celebration of Chinese New Year the ANC Women’s Group held a Chinese New Year Party on February 19th which included crafts, food, and performances. The Cooking Together pilot program is a partnership between Bridges to Hope, MUN MED Gateway, and the Association for New Canadians. The sessions allow newcomers and MUN medical student volunteers to share cooking skills, recipes, and learn with the guidance of a chef and kitchen coordinator at Bridges to Hope. The Cooking Together pilot concludes with a grocery store and community room session, giving participants the opportunity to get involved with the preparation for the sessions and connect with community resources. At the end of each session the participants and volunteers share the meal that they prepared together, which includes traditional dishes from Newfoundland and around the world. The medical students and newcomer participants are able to learn from each other through socialization and communication throughout the sessions, providing a valuable learning experience for all involved...

LINC Home Study Program
This distance ESL program is offered to LINC-eligible newcomers who wish to improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. This self-paced course of study follows the Canadian Language Benchmarks outcomes, and is offered via correspondence or online. All participants are provided with a weekly half-hour session with a TESL-certified instructor. The Association for New Canadians' Women's Group hosted a Christmas Party on December 17, 2014. Participants made Christmas cookies, played some games, and were delighted to welcome the 1st Paradise Scouts who generously collected and delivered toys to those who attended the event. On Wednesday, December 10, representatives from the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission delivered a presentation on human rights to CLB Level 4, 5, and 6 classes in recognition of Human Rights Day. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session. In preparation for the event, students from all classes at the ESL Training Centre (Foundation A to Level 6) wrote a one-sentence definition of what human rights means to them. The definitions, written on brightly-coloured slips of paper, were used to make a colourful 'wall of human rights' display...

On Friday, December 5, the Association for New Canadians, with support from the Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, hosted a Newcomer Youth Leadership and Careers in the Applied Sciences conference. The event provided over 30 newcomer youth with an opportunity to participate in a variety of interactive workshops, including demonstrations by Suncor, College of the North Atlantic, Academy Canada, as well as a number of faculties from Memorial University. All youth in attendance were given complimentary lab coats and goggles to take home and, at the end of the day, participated in a bridge building contest for some great prizes!
