On May 7, 2014 the Association for New Canadians hosted its sixth annual Diversity Symposium. Dr. Rob Greenwood, Director of Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, set the stage for the Symposium by addressing the theme of Fueling Growth: Linking Immigration, Economic Development, and Diversity in Newfoundland and Labrador. In his keynote address, Mr. Ken Marshall, President - Atlantic Region at Rogers Communications Inc, discussed the business case for enhancing diversity, the positive effects of Rogers Diversity Program and related success stories, as well as the values and benefits of diversity in the workplace. Following his remarks, Mr. Marshall joined a panel of key stakeholders, including Sharon Horan, President, St. John's Board of Trade, and Deidre Ayre, Studio Head and Director, Other Ocean Group Canada Ltd., to discuss issues related to diversity in the workforce, attracting and retaining immigrants, and the important role that immigration can play in meeting the needs of businesses throughout the province. Do you represent a business in Newfoundland and Labrador? If so, the ANC would like to invite you to participate in an online Business Needs Assessment. The survey addresses a number of topics related to diversity, hiring immigrants, as well as the challenges immigrants may face when entering the provincial workforce. With support from the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism, AES, the Association for New Canadians hosted an "ANC Global Tour" event on Friday, March 21st, 2014 in honor of Canadian Multiculturalism Week 2014. For this public event, ANC clients created a series of information booths showcasing their particular culture and/or country of origin. Booths displayed the diversity of cultures represented throughout the St. John’s CMA and included historical and cultural information, art, traditional clothing, flags, music, and food. In addition, a talent and fashion show highlighted the unique artistic practices and traditional dress of the many diverse cultures represented throughout the St. John's CMA.

The Association for New Canadians' Men's Group hosted a Community Kitchen event with the assistance of volunteers from Memorial University's School of Medicine. Participants baked cakes and had the opportunity to speak with volunteers about their experiences with food and cooking in their countries of origin, as well as since their arrival in Canada.
