On Thursday, June 26th, twelve women came together for the monthly Women’s Group session. Participants designed and created glass lanterns for the Victoria Park Lantern Festival, scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 26th. The Read to Ride Program hosted a ceremony at the Association for New Canadians' ESL Training Centre on Thursday, June 27. A student from each level at the ESL Training Centre was awarded a bicycle and helmet for their reading achievements, and there were prize draws for those in attendance. A big thanks to David D'Entremont and everyone at Read to Ride who helped facilitate this event

HELP MAKE THE ANC'S MULTICULTURAL FAMILY SPORTS DAY A GREAT SUCCESS!
To help increase newcomer families' accessibility to sport and recreation activities in the community, the Association for New Canadians is seeking donations of gently used sports equipment for its upcoming event, Multicultural Family Sports Day, to be held on June 27th 2014 at Ayre Athletic Field in St. John's.
We are seeking donations of:
Please drop off your donations to the ANC's Main Office located at 144 Military Road or the ANC's ESL Training Centre at 10 Smithville Crescent on or before June 24th, 2014.

The Association for New Canadians’ hosted a "Soup’s On" event in order to raise funds to help support refugees worldwide. Students and staff prepared and sold lentil stew on Thursday, June 19, raising $200
to be donated to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). A big thank-you to everyone who came out to this event.
The ANC also hosted a Refugee Settlement Information Session on June 18th as part of the Refugee Week events. This information session highlighted the global refugee situation as well as the settlement process here in Newfoundland...

Students and staff at the Association for New Canadians' ESL Training Centre held a fundraiser in late May/early June in order to raise money to subsidize a bowling outing for the school. Transportation Manager, Wayne Pearce, delivered a Transportation Orientation to newcomer students at the Association's ESL Training Centre on May 26, 2014. The orientation included a variety of information related to transportation services provided by the Association, including:
Transportation contact information;
Child safety, and proper use of safety equipment; and,
Seatbelts, car seats, boosters

The Association for New Canadians' Men's Group hosted a Community Kitchen event with the assistance of volunteers from Memorial University's School of Medicine. Participants made personal pizzas and salads and had the opportunity to speak with volunteers about their experiences with food and cooking in their countries of origin, as well as since their arrival in Canada

On May 7, 2014 the Association for New Canadians hosted its sixth annual Diversity Symposium. Dr. Rob Greenwood, Director of Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, set the stage for the Symposium by addressing the theme of Fueling Growth: Linking Immigration, Economic Development, and Diversity in Newfoundland and Labrador. In his keynote address, Mr. Ken Marshall, President - Atlantic Region at Rogers Communications Inc, discussed the business case for enhancing diversity, the positive effects of Rogers Diversity Program and related success stories, as well as the values and benefits of diversity in the workplace. Following his remarks, Mr. Marshall joined a panel of key stakeholders, including Sharon Horan, President, St. John's Board of Trade, and Deidre Ayre, Studio Head and Director, Other Ocean Group Canada Ltd., to discuss issues related to diversity in the workforce, attracting and retaining immigrants, and the important role that immigration can play in meeting the needs of businesses throughout the province.
