Please come and join us for the 2017 Diversity Symposium on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at the Hotel Gander.

For seven years, the Association for New Canadians (ANC) has hosted an annual Diversity Symposium in the St. John' area. These Symposia have each brought together several dozen academics, business leaders, government officials and representatives of a range of walks of life and community groups to discuss the full range of Diversity issues. This important yearly event has created a platform around the topic of Diversity and Immigration while providing an opportunity to promote public education, awareness and media coverage.

Increasingly, the Association for New Canadians has targeted the private sector on the Avalon Peninsula as principal participants for its Diversity Symposia. Recent Symposia have adopted business-related themes to bring together business leaders, and company owners, managers and employees to debate the benefits to be derived from welcoming immigrants into the workplace and to outline some of the difficulties encountered. For example, the last Symposium was entitled “Fueling Growth: Linking Immigration, Economic Development and Diversity in Newfoundland and Labrador” where the keynote speaker was Ken Marshall of Rogers’ Communications.

The 2017 Diversity Symposium will be held in the town of Gander. It will mark the first time the Association for New Canadians has hosted a Diversity Symposium outside of the St. John's region. It is particularly appropriate that Gander has been selected to be host since the town has been known as the “Crossroads of the World” since the 1940s and there has also been a modest influx of immigrants to the Gander area in the last couple of years.

The 2017 Diversity Symposium will focus on Business Diversity – in particular, how local businesses in Gander and surrounding towns can work towards integrating immigrant newcomers into their work-forces. It is hoped that the 2017 Diversity Symposium will attract significant private-sector, local government and non-governmental organization (NGO) participation from across the Kittiwake region.
