Family Mentorship Program: The Family Mentorship Program involves being matched with a family that you visit once a week to offer the following support:
- Assistance with settlement issues (e.g., reading mail, paying bills, etc.)
- Helping families explore the community or participate in social events
Time commitment: 2 hours/week x 4 months
ESL Volunteer Tutor Program: The ESL Volunteer Tutor Program involves being matched with an adult or child/youth that you will visit once a week to provide basic ESL instruction. Younger students may also require assistance with homework and/or school assignments.
After-school Program: The After-school Program is offered at various elementary schools in the St. John's area. This program offers homework support to newcomer children in a group environment, as well as the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational and social activities. Volunteers assist by:
- Helping participants with homework, assignments, and projects
- Participating in group activities
- Assisting with the set-up and clean-up of events
Time commitment: 1.5 hours/week x 4 months
ESL Conversation Circle Program: The ESL Conversation Circle Program is delivered at the ANC’s ESL Training Centre on Mondays from 1-2 PM. The program provides adult ESL learners with the opportunity to converse with native English speakers on a variety of topics in a friendly, relaxed environment. Volunteers assist by:
- Facilitating a conversation with 1 - 3 students
- Asking questions and sharing information
- Assisting students with vocabulary and pronunciation
Time commitment: N/A
Special Events/Activities: Throughout the year, the ANC recruits volunteers for special events and activities including:
- Assisting at the Donation Centre
- Public Health Clinics
- Women's/Men's/Youth Groups
