Newcomer Match Program

The Newcomer Match Program pairs volunteers with newcomers to Canada to help them adjust to life in St. John’s. Volunteers meet with their newcomer for two hours a week for a minimum of six months to offer:

- An opportunity to practice English
- Information on Canadian customs, culture and society
- An awareness of community resources
- Insight into life in Newfoundland

 

What will I do with my match?

Participants in the Newcomer Match Program will each have unique goals they would like to accomplish with a volunteer. Based on these goals, volunteers may:

- Practice conversational English
- Assist with reading and writing
- Visit organizations or groups that are of interest to the participant
- Visit local attractions together

 

Academic Tutor Program

The Academic Tutor Program pairs volunteers with English as a Second Language (ESL) students in grades K-12 to help teach English and/or other school subjects. Volunteers meet with their student for two hours a week for a minimum of six months to offer:

- Assistance in learning English
- Homework support
- Help in exam preparation

Who will I be matched with?

Participants in both the Newcomer Match Program and Academic Tutor Program come from many different countries, including Nepal, Sudan, and the Congo. They may be part of large families or single persons, and have varying levels of English proficiency. The Volunteer Coordinator will match you with an individual or family based on:

- Family type
- Level of English
- Location in St. John’s
- Age

 

ESL Conversation Circle Program

The ESL Conversation Circle program is delivered at the ANC ESL Training Centre on Mondays from 1-2 PM. The program provides adult ESL learners with the opportunity to converse with native English speakers on a variety of topics in a friendly, relaxed environment. Volunteers assist by:

- Facilitating a conversation with 1-3 students
- Asking questions and sharing information
- Assisting students with vocabulary and pronunciation

 

ESL Training Centre Volunteer

The ANC’s ESL Training Centre offers English instruction to adult newcomers in one of nine ESL levels following the Canadian Language Benchmarks. The ESL Training Centre Volunteer Program places volunteers in the classroom to assist the teacher by:

- Helping students with projects, assignments, and homework
- Providing one-on-one assistance to students
- Assisting the instructor as needed

 

Volunteers can assist in one of three classroom periods:

9-10:30 AM
10:45-12:00 PM
12:30-2:00 PM
 

Women’s Group/Men's Group

Women’s and Men's Groups are program offered on a monthly basis to all newcomer men and women who wish to participate. The group provides participants with the opportunity to improve their English language skills while participating in a variety of educational, recreational and social activities. Volunteers assist by:

- Participating in group activities
- Engaging the participants in conversation and cultural sharing
- Assisting with the set-up and clean-up of events

 

Afterschool Program

The Afterschool Program is offered at two elementary schools in the St. John’s area. This program offers homework support to newcomer children in a group environment, as well as the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational and social activities. Volunteers assist by:

- Aiding participants with homework, assignments, and projects
- Participating in group activities
- Assisting with the set-up and clean-up of events
