Youth IDEAS Anti-Racism Summit
What an incredible experience we had hosting our very first Youth IDEAS Anti-Racism Summit last week! Junior high and high school students from across the St. John’s metro region, as well as students from our language school, joined us to explore topics around diversity and inclusion in our community and build meaningful connections with one another.

The event’s theme was “Storytelling for Social Change”, with the goal of using personal narratives to raise awareness, build empathy, and inspire action against racism and discrimination in schools.

The day consisted of many fun icebreaker games and activities that allowed the students to both highlight their unique backgrounds and see how much they have in common, including trivia, diversity bingo, an interactive world map, and a passport to be added to throughout the event.

There was also a presentation from Heather Barrett on her co-authored book “Black Harbour: Slavery and the Forgotten Histories of Black People in Newfoundland and Labrador” and an anti-racism workshop provided by Laurabel Mba of Laurabel Mba Consulting and DiversityNL’s Stephanie Howlett.

In addition, students got to enjoy an array of delicious food from around the world and spectacular performances from Baraka Music and Bollywood Jig.

Thank you to everyone who supported this wonderful initiative, including City of Mount Pearl, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, NLSchools, Mamacita Mexican Kitchen & Latin Market, CurryDelight, Grilleopatra , O SUSHI, Persepolis Persian Restaurant, Gian’s Kitchen, Peter’s Pizza, Jungle Jim’s Eatery, Tim Hortons, Dairy Queen, Jelly Bean Entertainment, ANC team members, and, last but not least, all the students and teachers for your amazing participation and help in making this day a major success!
