Literacy and Education Upgrading

In NL, there are learning opportunities available for adult residents who, for one reason or another, did not complete high school, or have difficulty reading and writing.

There are also opportunities for adults who have completed high school and wish to pursue higher education, but need upgrading in certain subjects before they enrol in regular post-secondary programs. For example, a person may need upgrading in subjects like academic English, academic math, biology or chemistry.

Obtaining or Upgrading High School Diploma as an Adult

Adults who are 18 years of age and out of school for at least a year may attend the Adult Basic Education Program. Learners in this program can acquire high school credits or upgrade existing marks to meet the admission requirements of post-secondary institutions or to complete requirements for the High school Completion Program. Individuals  wishing to attend ABE are eligible to receive placement support allowance which may include a start-up allowance, monthly stipend, transportation and subsidized child care.

Computer skills have become essential in virtually every job. Everybody should have basic computer skills.
